U. S. Steel Releases Special ‘Molten’ Graphic Design
Farmington, Minn (July 29, 2010) Today, U. S. Steel released the graphics that will be carried by Darrell Nelson at this year’s USA Nationals – August 5 to 7 – at Cedar Lake Speedway for the USA Nationals presented by U. S. Steel. Nelson, known by his fans as the Hermantown Hammer, is driving a team car to Josh McGuire in this year’s USA Nationals as Darrell will carry his colors in the $2,500-to-win NASCAR portion of the show.
The design of the #44 machine is radically different from that of McGuire’s racer. Scott Coleman, U. S. Steel’s Minnesota Ore Operations General Manager, wanted to create a car that was “different than anything anyone has seen on a racecar but epitomized steel making.” The idea for the car came for the most recognizable part of making steel… the process in which molten steel is poured. The car appearance is to represent this process with the molten steel, sparks and smoke and to give the appearance that Darrell’s car “drove through a wall of molten steel.”
Both Nelson and McGuire share the same “stamped” steel number with bolts, the USS logo on the hood, and the U. S. Steel name adorning the rear quarter panels and spoiler while also carrying their regular sponsors. During the USA Nationals weekend, Darrell will have limited-edition U. S. Steel t-shirts commemorating the new graphic scheme on his car. This merchandise is being produced by ASi Racewear will be sold from the Josh McGuire souvenir trailer. Later this year, a small run of die-casts will also be available for purchase directly from Darrell as he will carry this graphic theme into the Labor Day Shootout.
